But what is a real education — and why does it need defending?
It was so intense, I don't think I can keep my eyes open long enough to blog about it. Anyways, Edmundson's article was about his own experiences as a professor at the University of Virginia. His students would evaluate him as being an interesting professor but Edmundson himself did not like his self image that came from the responses.
He doesn't like to be seen as an entertainer or some jokester, he really wants his students to see him as the real deal- a well-respected instructor who can change their modes of thinking.
This made me think about my contemporary art history teacher, Dr.
Like Edmundson, he too would use his sarcastic humor, jokes, and off-the-wall questions to capture his students' attention. But he used all of that to get our minds cranking through some real life issues.
I remember laughing at a few of his personal thoughts on minimalism but I also remember how challenging and provoking his questions and the concepts he delivered to us were.
Teaching the complexities of art after is no small task to tackle, especially if you have to come up with new ways to deliver material. I really do admire teachers who put forth a lot of time and effort into their lectures and lessons but I also cannot help but say that I greatly feel challenged by their outlooks and the things that they assign us to read.
I may not always enjoy it but if the instructor does something that's different and engaging, that goes beyond the "concreteness" that Freire was talking about, I don't think I could ever forget the teacher or the course itself. I would have to agree with his statement though that "students lack confidence to acknowledge for learning: I think we are all ignorant people but when a teacher takes the time to really make the subjects they teach "interesting", it definitely attracts students to learn and think a little differently.
In the consumer culture we live in today, we can either go with the now or stick to the old. I honestly don't think either way is bad. Right now I'm wondering whether Edmundson's points on consumer culture still stands today.
Like, do students really need to rely on looking cool in college? From what I've seen most college students are competitive and strive to want to be the best that they can be.
There's just no time for being "cool" when you're juggling 15 hours of school credit or more a semester.
